In 1840, nearly 200 years ago, the American Society of Dental Surgeons sounded the alarm that mercury teeth fillings were hazardous to our health. But, because they were cheaper, faster and easier to use than gold, the National Dental Association—later renamed the American Dental Association (ADA)—has continued to use them to this very day despite mercury toxicity being linked to neurological diseases, ADD, autism, kidney damage, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and more.
Composed of an amalgam of five metals: mercury, copper, beryllium zinc, and nickel, these “silver” fillings have been used to fill tooth cavities for decades. Perhaps you even have a few yourself. Yet, today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers mercury so dangerous, that when amalgams are removed, dentists must follow a toxic waste disposal protocol!
Ask the Question
So, you must ask yourself, how could it be safe to put in our mouths what is considered hazardous toxic waste when it’s removed?
That’s a very good question!
From the moment amalgams are inserted, mercury toxicity begins to leach into the whole body. This action is excerbated by chewing, brushing or hot beverages. According to The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, (IAOMT.org), “toxic metals bind in damaging ways to destroy mitochondria (the cells’ energy generator), impair nerve growth, disrupt enzyme systems, push iron of blood cells, decrease immune function and pile up residual deposits in cells.”
Over the years, the IAOMT reports that this toxic build up can lead a long list of ailments and even chronic conditions. The following is their list of “20 Signs and Symptoms of Mercury Exposure from Amalgam Fillings:”
- Memory loss
- Concentration problems
- Numbness, tingling in hands, feet, fingers
- Muscle weakness
- Balance issues
- Tremors (hands, feet, eyes, fingers)
- Bleeding gums
- Shocks and pain in brain
- Stiff neck and shoulder pain
- Metallic taste
- Numbness of face
- Burning, tingling of lips
- Ringing ears
- Speech impairment
Alternative medicine physician and natural health expert, Dr. Joseph Mercola, also lists depression, chronic fatigue, Parkinsons Disease and other disorders that “jam our biochemistry and cause nervous system toxicity” as a result of mercury exposure. No amount of exposure is said to be safe. Even low levels of mercury have been documented to cause adverse health effects. Countries like Norway, Denmark and Sweden, have banned mercury amalgams altogether.
In a chilling video, IAOMT shows the actual toxic vapors coming off of mercury fillings when stimulated. Click here to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ylnQ-T7oiA
So, What Are My Options?
The healthiest solution is to have your amalgams removed, but this must be done by a biological dentist who knows how to take the necessary precautions during the procedure. Within a couple of weeks, your mercury levels will drop significantly reducing the toxic burden on your body.
Thousands of documented cases show those who’ve had their fillings removed report less headaches, allergies, fatigue, skin issues, digestive problems, and improvements of chronic health problems. (http://amalgam.org)
But filling removal must also form part of an integrated health plan that includes a therapeutic use of nutrition, hydration, detoxification, and supplementation to rebalance the body’s chemistry and complement the healing and repair process.
What Can I Do Right Now?
Until you can get to a biological dentist and have your fillings removed, there are steps you can take to help boost your immune system and reduce some of the toxicity. Nutritionist Barbara Mendez, RPh MS recommends these following tips:
- Eat no fish for 3 months
- Do liver cleanses (to detoxify)
- Eat garlic (it binds mercury)
- Eat cilantro (it chelates mercury)
- Include brazil nuts 4 times a day (with immune-boosting selenium)
- Have a daily ¼ cup of pumpkin seeds (full of magnesium and zinc)
- Eat a daily ¼ cup of sunflower seeds (stimulates glutathione production, a powerful antioxidant)
- Include flax seeds (eliminates toxins)
- Drink lots of water (6-8 glasses a day)
Our bodies are made up of interconnected systems that all affect each other. By becoming more and more educated about how identifying and reducing our exposure to toxins toxins in our food, environment, relationships, and lives, we can make the wisest choices to optimize our health.
In the case of amalgam fillings, none of us wants a mouthful of trouble. By replacing mercury fillings with safer alternatives such as ceramic, we move many steps closer to positive, enduring health.
