When an illness strikes, especially a serious one, it is a crucial time to have faith in God. But, if you’ve never had to trust God for healing, it’s a new experience. Only walking through that trial day by day will teach us new dimensions of God’s love, faithfulness and power, and build up that spiritual muscle.
The Word tells us of times when Jesus healed instantly, but it wasn’t the only way He healed.
There are several examples where Jesus healed people in many different ways.
- Sometimes, He asked people to physically cooperate with Him for their healing. In John 9:6-7, Jesus spit on the ground, made some mud and smeared it on a blind man’s eyes. Then he said, ” ‘Go and wash off the mud in Siloam Pool.’ The man went and washed in Siloam, which means ‘One Who Is Sent.’ When he had washed off the mud, he could see.”
- Another time, Jesus probed people’s faith before healing them. When two blind men came to him in Matthew 9:27-31 asking for their sight, Jesus asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” Their response was “Yes, Lord,” indicating not just their faith, but also clear understanding of who Jesus was. Jesus said, “According to your faith will it be done to you.” And their sight was restored.”
- In Mark 7:31, Jesus took a deaf mute away from the crowd that had brought him before He healed him. Sometimes, our healing needs to happen in the one-one one privacy of our relationship with our Lord and away from the expectations, mixed faith and possibly even unbelief that can exist in a group of well wishing family and friends, skeptics and onlookers. “After He took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, He spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, ‘Ephphatha!” (which means ‘Be opened!’) At this, the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.”
These are just three examples of Jesus’ healing hundreds if not thousands of their physical, emotional and spiritual afflictions. And He is still doing it today!
If you need healing, lean in to the Lord, spend time in deep communion with Him. Open His Word, study his healing promises, stir up your faith, pray with passion, and wait on Him to reveal His plan for your healing. Is He asking you to take some steps? Is He probing your faith? Do you need to forgive someone? Is there a lifestyle change necessary for your release?
Spend time in the presence of He who made you, knows everything about you, died out of love for you, and lives to make you Healed, Healthy and Whole. He is willing!
