5 Amazing Bodily Uses for Coconut Oil

Health experts can list up to 100 uses for coconut oil. It is one of our most versatile and health-promoting organic substances on our planet. I’ve listed 5 uses here that I consider particularly helpful.

  1. Natural Sunscreen
Getting some sun on a regular basis is important for your health, but it can prove damaging to your skin and even promote skin cancer if you do not protect it adequately. Up until recently, it was thought a good sunscreen would allow us to safely soak up the rays, but now we know that even the most popular brands contain hazardous chemicals—principally benzophenone-3 which the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has identified as an endocrine disruptor.Organic Virgin Cocount Oil is a safe, natural sunscreen that protects against sun damage and even sunburn. With an Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 4, it blocks 75% of UV radiation. This allows for about 45 minutes of direct exposure allowing you body the health benefits of sunshine but not the sun damage. Just stay within the time limits!
  1. Skin Moisturizer: Coconut oil is an anti bacterial, nourishing moisturizer that absorbs quickly into the skin. You can use it twice a day: before bedtime and first thing in the morning. Wash and dry your face, then using circular motions, gently spread the oil over your whole face and neck. Finish by wiping off any excess. Your skin will love it!
  1. Soothing Massage Oil: Create your own relaxing massage oil by mixing coconut oil with a few drops of any of the following therapeutic essential oils: lavender, chamomile or rose (these are health promoting botanicals). These give off a wonderful fragrance and the combination helps relax those tight, tired muscles. Use it also to moisturize and refresh your whole body after a warm shower. Though it takes a few minutes to absorb, the oiliness will disappear and your skin will feel beautifully soft.
  1. Teeth and Gums Fortifier: Who would have thought that coconut oil could be used to improve dental hygiene, but it does! An ancient practice from East Indian cultures, oil pulling with coconut oil is known to fight bacteria, help heal gums and tooth decay, detoxify the mouth, and boost the immune system. First thing in the morning before your tea, coffee or breakfast, take and hold a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. Swish it around without swallowing, and spit it out into a trashcan when finished (best not to use the sink or toilet repeatedly use this can clog pipes!) Rinse out your mouth with water mixed with a little sea salt and notice how clean your teeth and gums feel. It’s recommended you repeat the process 3-4 times a week.
  1. Natural Insect Repellent: This is so helpful, especially if you’re one of those people that bugs love! Take a tablespoon of coconut oil and mix it with a few drops of tea tree, rosemary or peppermint oil. Apply it to any or all areas of your body and keep those annoying mosquitos, wasps, gnats and bugs away!
